Kenya: Open University Goes Live, First Enrollment Starts

20 September 2023

Nairobi — The Open University of Kenya application portal has opened today, allowing students to start applying for courses.

Konza Technopolis Chief Executive Officer John Paul Okwiri said this while speaking at the launch of the Economic Innovation Partnership Programme in partnership with the Korean Government.

"I'm glad to report that we've been able to go live. Students who are able to begin registration and get admission can say a lot of progress has been made and one can now log in to the website and get admitted," Okwiri said.

"It went live today and at the end of the day we will be able to get the number of students who have already been admitted," he added.

The Open University, which is the first virtual higher learning institution in the country, was awarded a charter by President William Ruto in August this year.

Its award coincides with the Head of State's goal to provide Kenya with affordable and high-quality education.

Ruto said his administration is keen on offering competitive and industry-driven education aligned with the government's economic transformation agenda.

"It will also build a formidable stock of qualified and skilled graduates for our market and beyond," the President said earlier.

He added that the university offers a chance for ordinary Kenyans to pursue professional training of their choice, wherever they are.
