Kenya: Bomas Dialogue Team Agrees on Expansion of IEBC Selection Panel

Nairobi — Members of the National Dialogue Committee (NDC) have approved the restructuring of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Selection Panel to include two additional members.

The change was endorsed during a Friday sitting co-chaired by Embu Governor Cecile Mbarire and Minority Leader Opiyo Wandayi.

"We have to an agreement, that we shall have a reconstitution of the IEBC selection and in this reconstitution the membership of the IEBC selection panel is going to increase from the present seven to nine, of course encompassing various opinions and of interests groups," Wandayi said.

The committee also agreed to formulate a framework to audit the 2022 elections in two weeks' time.

"We have agreed that we develop a framework on the audit of the electoral process that is going to be done in two weeks," Mbarire said.

Talks team added that they will seek parliamentary approval on a month-long extension of National Dialogue Committee's mandate.

The decision was made on the realization that the team had fifteen days to finalize its mandate.

"We are now at the very last of the phase that is very critical and we must to a very good job for this country and we now ask the majority and minority leaders to move motion for extension of the national dialogue committee," Mbarire said.

The committee had earlier agreed the formation of the offices of the official opposition leader, the Prime Cabinet Secretary, realization of the two-thirds gender requirement and entrenching party loyalty.

The committee is set to retreat for a week to compile its final report to be presented to the National Assembly.

The report will entail the committee's findings based on the submissions from interested parties, members of the public, experts, and professionals who testified before it.
