Kenya: Ruto Awards 5 KDF Soldiers for Heroic Acts in the Battlefield With Al-Shabaab

Nairobi — President William Ruto has awarded five Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) soldiers for their heroic actions in the battlefield.

Those awarded include engineers and medics who rescued injured soldiers from hostile territory.

Corporal Ahmed Chire was awarded for manually removing an under vehicle improvised explosive device during a mission in Somalia on June 1, 2022 after a robotic arm failed.

Atuba Laban Chirchir (Kenya Army) was awarded for stabilizing two casualties injured in an ambush in Boni Forest on May 8, 2021.

Chirchir sustained the two casualties for six hours before they were evacuated.

Another soldier, John Kimothe Wanjiru, helped evacuate a wounded special operation soldier by dragging him out of contact on May 7, 2021 in Boni Forest Lamu county.

"As a result he was cut off his group and managed to survive for five days while navigating through the Boni forest with the casualty," his citation read.

Senior Sergeant Ibrahim Mohamed Babuya of the Kenya Air force was also awarded for cross branding of combat radio communication and actualizing the KDF command and control system saving substantial finances.

Also Sergeant Aloise Oteno Migai, an electrical engineer in Kenya Navy (Mtongwe), was awarded for rewiring several electrical equipment on board Kenya Navy ships thereby saving the KDF substantial finances.

The soldiers were awarded during the KDF Day celebrations held at the Embakasi Garrison in Nairobi on Saturday.

KDF day is observed annually to commemorate and celebrate the acts of valor and gallantry by KDF heroes and heroines.

It has been observed since October 2012 following the launch of Operation Linda Nchi in October 2011.

The 2023 event was themed: "Towards Sustainable Welfare for the Kenya Defence Forces Fraternity Welfare."
