Kenya: President Ruto to Visit Japan in May 2024

Nairobi — President William Ruto is set to embark on an official visit to Japan in the coming year, reciprocating a visit by Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida to Nairobi in May.

The upcoming visit was confirmed on Monday during a meeting between President Ruto and Japanese Ambassador to Kenya, Ken Okaniwa, at State House Nairobi.

Ambassador Okaniwa delivered a message from Prime Minister Kishida and briefed President Ruto on the forthcoming visit.

President Ruto highlighted the strong historical ties and cooperation between Kenya and Japan, particularly praising Japan's support for various critical infrastructure projects in Kenya.

He expressed his gratitude for Japan's contributions, which have included funding for projects in health, agriculture, education, such as the upgrade of the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) laboratory, the construction of the Southern bypass in Mombasa, and the implementation of an intelligent transport system in Mombasa County.

The discussions during Prime Minister Kishida's visit in May encompassed mutually beneficial commercial and economic partnerships, education, scholarships, and infrastructure development, while also addressing regional peace and security concerns, including the situation in Sudan.
