Kenya: City Hall Reviewing Liquor Licensing Regulations

Mombasa — The Nairobi County Government's Business and Hustler Opportunities County Executive Maureen Njeri is leading a workshop with Nairobi Liquor Board, Liqour Directorate, and ICT on the development of a Customer Service delivery charter, A comprehensive Standard Operating Procedures and review of liquor licensing regulations for the Nairobi liquor industry players.

According to Njeri, this is among the many action steps geared towards transforming the management of the Liquor Licensing function in the County.

"Governor Sakaja Johnson is keen on ensuring that there is order and dignity in the liquor industry as we continue to carry out our mandate of ensuring the Standard Operating Procedures, the Customer Service charter which is customer centric and the Liquor Act conforms with the current realities and address emerging issues like delayed licensing, streamlined operations/enforcement which will in the long run address Zoning issues, Noise pollution among other concerns to restore order and dignity," she stated.

The Nairobi Liquor Board service delivery charter will be a key deliverable in ensuring that the sector offers effective and efficient services to its customers.

The workshop facilitators include legal experts and the County Smart Nairobi - ICT team in ensuring the deliverables are substantive and consistent with the mandate of the sector.

In attendance are the Nairobi County liquor Board Members, Patrick Mbogo, Boroughs Administration and Personnel, Chief Officer Business Hustler Opportunities, Zipporah Mwangi, Chief Officer, Smart Nairobi, Tiras Njoroge, Director Liquor Licensing Rhoda Otieno, Assistant Directors and staff of liquor department.

The Nairobi Liquor and Licensing department recently set out to map out liquor outlets in the city. The one-month mapping exercise set to ensure all liquor businesses are identified and captured in a database for the following purposes.

These procedures will be critical in also advancing the County revenue enhancement agenda.
