MMC for Finance in Ekurhuleni Nkululeko Dunga was involved in a multi-vehicle accident that resulted in the death of a cyclist.

Dunga was said to have been travelling in one of the vehicles and sustained serious injuries.

The accident that happened along the R21 South, just before the Pomona off-ramp on Monday night, involved four vehicles, one of which belonged to the council. A cyclist died at the scene.

Ekurhuleni Police spokesperson, Kelebogile Thepa said members of the EMPD responded to the accident and the injured parties were transported to hospital, where they are receiving medical attention.

The South African Police Service are investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident.

Further details will be released by the relevant authorities in due course, Thepa added.

In a statement released by the mayor's office, they confirmed the accident involving the MMC.

"We confirm that this unfortunate incident resulted in several injuries and a tragic loss of life," said Mayor Sivuyile Ngodwana.

"Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers go out to all individuals and families affected during this difficult time."
