Nairobi — The National Police Service has denied reports of a siege by bandits on a General Service Unit camp in Baringo's Kapindasum location.
Police Spokesperson Resila Onyango clarified that the police camp was not attacked as earlier claimed noting that the area was calm.
A preliminary report indicated that a GSU patrol team came under attack by suspected Pokot bandits on Tuesday afternoon at a river crossing.
Police said a shootout ensued when the patrol team of GSU on board their vehicle were crossing river Kapindasum to the adjacent primary school on their routine security check.
"Suspected Pokot bandits waylaid and shot at them thus ignited a gunfire fight which partially affected their nearby camp," read a police report obtained by Capital News.
Following the incident, the GSU officers received reinforcements form the officers drawn from the Rapid Deployment Unit (RDU) and additional GSU officers from neighboring camps and local reservists to battle the suspected bandits.
"The operation to repulse and subdue the bandits is still on course but the joint security teams have gained ground," police said.
No casualty was reported at the time of going to the press.
