Kenya: PS Omollo Urges Scholars to Support Security, Peace Building Efforts

Nairobi — Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo has called on scholars and practitioners in the peace-building sector to collaborate with the government in developing preemptive and preventive solutions to the security challenges affecting the country.

PS Omollo urged all the players in peace and security sector to be actively involved in the national dialogue that seeks to strengthen Kenya's capacity to address conflicts in the country and the region at large.

To bolster its capacity to address conflicts within and outside the country, PS Omollo disclosed that Kenya is in the final stages of reviewing its National Peacebuilding Architecture, with its unveiling set for later in the year, as part of the wider efforts to promote sustainable peace.

"Kenya may very well be the only country around the world that has undertaken a peacebuilding architecture review and it is our aspiration that the implementation will reinforce our position as a global and regional leader in peacebuilding," PS Omollo said.

Africa-centric approach

The PS was speaking when he presided over the official opening of the 2023 Biennial International Peace Conference at the African International University on Tuesday.

PS Omollo said the three-day conference will primarily focus on incorporating African-centric values into peace-building processes.

During the event, participants will also examine Kenya's experiences in areas of peace and conflict.

PS Omollo said that Kenya is looking to take the leading role amidst evolving security landscape in the region noting that such engagements will paly a critical role in addressing existing gaps in the peace building architecture.

"As you are aware, there is a lot of conflict not just in this continent of ours but across and we are looking at learning from experiences from various scholars and practitioners' individuals also involved peacebuilding space," PS Omollo said.

The event brought together participants drawn from across Africa and the country.

Present at the event was the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) Chairperson Samuel Kobia among other senior officials.
