Uganda: Man Arrested for Strangling, Secretly Burying New Born Baby

Residents of Katugo LCI in Irindimura parish ,Nalweyo sub-county Kakumiro District were left in shock after a 42- year-old man strangled and secretly buried a one day old baby at night in a suspected ritual murder.

Alex Byamugisha Rafik a resident of Katugo parish in Irindimura parish Nalweyo sub-county Kakumiro district is alleged to have killed his baby and conducted a secret burial at night without the notice of community members.

Kwikiriza Yoram, the chairperson LCI Katugo said that Byamugisa told them his wife Kemigisa Allen gave birth to a weak baby with health complications and died after one day.

The LC one chairman however doubted this version, alleging that the suspect has been a menace in society.

Katushabe Priscilla a relative of the suspect said that family members and relatives are still puzzled over what happened.

Localls accused the suspect of killing the baby but wondered why he would go ahead to bury it at night and alone without other family members.

The suspected who looked drunk admitted having buried the baby alone but denied having strangled it.

He added that he had alerted some people who never turned up for burial, adding that his wife delivered normally but the baby developed health complications and died later.

Nalweyo police arrested Byamugisha and according to the Kakumiro DPC, SP Moris Niyonzima investigations into the matter are still ongoing.
