Uganda: I Subscribe to Mk Movement but My Party Is NUP, Says MP Kagabo

25 October 2023

Bukoto South Member of Parliament, Dr. Twaha Kagabo has said that despite subscribing to political movement, MK Movement, he is still inclined to opposition party, National Unity Platform (NUP).

Months ago, Kagabo, who is a medical doctor by training declared he had subscribed to the MK Movement led by First Son, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, triggering reports that he had dumped NUP.

However, appearing on NBS Television on Tuesday, Kagabo said his affiliation with the MK Movement does not take away the fact that he still belongs to the NUP led by Robert Kyagulanyi.

"Subscribing to a party doesn't mean that you dedicate all your sovereignty to it, and doesn't take away your friends. Even in Parliament, there are different forums we subscribe to, it should be the same with political movements. Many people including those of NRM and DP have embraced People Power movement."

"But for me, I ditched it (People Power) and embraced MK Movement. The party (NUP) president is aware about it because I have been publicly talking about it. I subscribe to MK Movement but my party is still NUP, and I still have a working relationship with the party president." he said on Tuesday.

Months ago, Kyagulanyi denounced Kagabo as a member of the opposition party, accusing him of defying the party instructions by skipping NUP meetings and attending those of the ruling party, National Resistance Movement (NRM).

"I would be happy if I could have seen your MP Kagabo here, but he isn't here. As a leader, I'm telling you he crossed over and is no longer with us; of course, we stopped trusting him," said Kyagulanyi in April while Meeting NUP leaders from Bukoto.

NUP has also on several occasions accused Kagabo of betraying the struggle by praising the incumbent regime, the opposition party wants out of power.

However, Kagabo has always insisted that whereas he belongs to NUP, he believes in certain ideologies of the ruling NRM.

He also disagrees with NUP members who oppose all government programmes.

"I am of sound mind. I cannot agree with you when you say NRM has done nothing in terms of health, education, and other matters. I am an objective person, and I believe in certain ideologies of NUP," he said.

"The Constitution has never mandated a person to oppose the government. You cannot have a Constitution that provides resources such as cars, offices, and financing to the opposition for the sole purpose of opposing you. The role of the opposition is to provide alternatives," he said in may.

Kagabo who stood on NUP ticket, won the MP seat for Bukoto South in 2021 Parliamentary elections after defeating NRM's Abdul Kiyimba and two others.

He garnered 8,883 votes against his closest rival, Kiyimba's 6,685 votes.
