Nairobi — Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja says no hawkers will be allowed to operate along all lanes connecting to Moi Avenue in the Nairobi Central Business District.

Sakaja proposed that the affected hawkers be given priority to operate along the back lanes where they can also operate and eke out a living.

The City Governor further dismissed those faulting him for targeting the hawkers, arguing that there needs to be a fair playing ground for anyone conducting business in the CBD.

"I want to make it clear that there will be no hawking on Moi Avenue" We have a plan for that area, and investors have brought in funds," Sakaja said.

Sakaja further announced that City Hall will tomorrow conduct a crackdown on hawkers within the selected areas.

He stated that the crackdown is aimed at controlling hawkers within the Central Business District (CBD).

"There will be no hawking on the road, " In fact I'm enforcing it from tomorrow morning," he stated. "Nairobi will be a city of order and dignity."

The county chief stated that the decision will not only benefit hawkers who risk their lives selling items on the roads but will also allow cars to move more freely.

Sakaja stated that the crackdown will provide more parking space for vehicles.

He explained that the sites have been designated for a multibillion-dollar project aimed at decongesting the metropolis.

Furthermore, he went on to say that the city has continued to face the dilemma since succeeding administrations had not constructed markets for these people.
