Kilifi — Leaders from Kilifi County now want the government to deploy more teachers to the county to deal with poor education standards in the area.
Led by Kilifi Governor Gideon Mung'aro, political leaders in the area decried the lack of teachers as one of the major causes of the poor performance of students in national examinations.
Speaking during an inter-faith prayer day at the Town Secondary School in Malindi, Governor Mung'aro said; "one of the major problems that we have in the education sector has been lack of teachers, we need more teachers to bridge this gap".
Governor Mung'aro underscored the need for concerted efforts to boost education in the region saying that his county has set aside more money in the education sector for the year 2022-2023 to boost education.
Speaking during the event in Malindi, Kilifi North MP Owen Baya on his part expressed the need for leaders to urgently join hands to compete with other regions across the region.
"During the last Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education, Kilifi County produced only 1A, while other counties produced over 100 to 300A's, we have a problem and we must work together as leaders," said MP Baya.
The event was attended by among others Gender Cabinet Secretary Aisha Jumwa and his mining counterpart Salim Mvurya who assured the leaders and residents of efforts by the Kenya Kwanza government to not only increase the number of teachers but improve education standards in the country.
The leaders also called for support in ensuring that the newly refurbished Town Secondary School in Malindi is upgraded to a National school by next year.
