Nairobi — The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has postponed the grassroots elections that was slated for December 9.

Following a deliberative meeting of UDA's National Steering Committee chaired by the Party leader William Ruto, the Party has resolved to postpone the elections to 12th, 19th, and 26th April 2024, respectively.

"All candidates and members of the Party are encouraged to continue sensitizing and recruiting members to the Party," the announcement read.

UDA, which said it has 7.2 million registered members, will use technology to ensure the grassroots polls are above board.

This coming week after the party extended an opportunity to parastatal heads, allowing them to participate in the upcoming grassroots elections slated for December 9, 2023.

This decision contradicts the initial advisory from Attorney General J. B Muturi and Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, which had deemed parastatal heads as State Officers, disqualifying them from engaging in political party activities.

The party Secretary General Cleophas Malala explained that UDA's decision was based on a ruling by the Court of Appeal.

This ruling determined that board chairmen and Directors do not fall under the category of State Officers, as defined by the Constitution.

Hence, UDA has permitted them to participate in the grassroots elections.
