Kenya: Azimio Tells Foreign Nations to Keep Off Kenya's Affairs

30 January 2024

Nairobi — The Azimio La Umoja One Kenya coalition has told foreign nations to keep off Kenya's affairs.

The coalition's sentiments come after the US Justice Dept welcomed President William Ruto's move to appeal the verdict on the deployment of security forces to Haiti.

Co-principal Martha Karua further called for the respect of the independence of the judiciary.

"We take note of the support expressed by the United States government for the Ruto regime to appeal against the ruling on the deployment of police to Haiti," she stated.

The Narc Kenya party leader urged all parties to respect the independence of the judiciary.

"It is our hope that all parties shall respect the Independence of the Judiciary and that foreign Interest will keep off our national affairs," Karua added.

In its ruling the High court stated that the deployment of Kenyan police to the Caribbean nation was unconstitutional, a decision that has cast uncertainty over the UN-backed mission aimed at addressing gang violence.

The Spokesperson for the U.S. Department of State, Matthew Miller, said President Joe Biden government supports Kenya's state decision to challenge the case before the high court stating its commitments to the ongoing peace efforts in Haiti.

"We reaffirm our support of ongoing international efforts to deploy a Multinational Security Support mission for Haiti, as requested by Haiti and authorized by UN Security Council Resolution 2699, and renew our calls for the international community to urgently provide support for this mission," Miller said

Since July 2021 Haiti has been grappling with a surge in violence following assassination of President Jovenel Moïse at his private residence in the capital, Port-au-Prince.

Kenya's security interventions aim to complement the efforts of understaffed and under-resourced Haiti national police force to counter gang violence in the Caribbean nation.
