Kenya: Govt Proposes Setup of Diaspora Council to Promote Relations With Kenyans Living Abroad

Nairobi — The government is looking to establish a Diaspora Council that will boost its relations with Kenyans living abroad.

This is contained in the 2024 Diaspora Draft, which is currently under public consideration.

If adopted, the draft will establish and operationalize the Diaspora Placement Agency, which will be a link for collaboration with private recruitment associations to develop diaspora skills as well as a knowledge and expertise database for Kenyans in the diaspora.

In a post shared on X, the State Department for Diaspora Affairs announced that the Kenya Diaspora Policy 2024 responds to emerging issues and trends since the adoption of the Diaspora Policy in 2014.

"As a major stakeholder in the Policy formulation process, the Kenyan Diaspora is hereby invited to read through the draft Kenya Diaspora Policy 2024 and submit proposals and comments to enrich the draft Policy," it said.

Likewise, the document seeks to develop measures to protect, support, and promote the rights, welfare, and interests of Kenyan citizens living abroad.

It will also facilitate the repatriation and evacuation of distressed Kenyans and the mortal remains of deceased Kenyans overseas.

The government adds that the diaspora draft will streamline financial remittances for the over 4 million Kenyans in the diaspora.
