The 14th meeting of the African Taskforce on Food and Nutrition Development (ATFFND), held from April 3-5 in Mombasa, Kenya, brought together stakeholders dedicated to advancing nutrition across the continent.

Hosted by the government of Kenya and the African Union Commission in collaboration with the African Development Bank's African Leaders for Nutrition (ALN) initiative, participants explored the complexities of implementing effective nutrition policies and strategies.

Under the theme, "Collaborating for Effective Implementation of the African Union Nutrition Policies and Strategies," participants engaged in dynamic discussions about education, nutrition strategies, and sustainable development.

The discussion of the Multisectoral Policy Framework and Financing Target for Nutrition, led by ALN leaders, was a pivotal moment as the framework is a significant step towards addressing the multifaceted nutrition challenges in Africa.

Reflecting on the significance of the gathering, Inas Mubarak, Head of the Health Systems, Diseases, and Nutrition Division at the African Union Commission, emphasized the need for concrete actions to accelerate progress, urging sustained commitment and collective effort, remarking, "I am glad this meeting was a chance to develop key concrete actions to accelerate progress. I call on all of us to sustain that commitment and momentum and collectively work to fast-track the implementation of these actions and recommendations."

The meeting also reviewed key initiatives such as the ALN initiative and the Continental Nutrition Accountability Scorecard. Technical guidance was provided on the African Union Nutrition Champion Work plan for 2024-2026, emphasizing measurable outcomes.

A Coordination and Document Review meeting was held to prepare the task force meeting from the 28th of March to the 1st of April, and it showcased tangible progress toward a Multisectoral Nutrition Policy Framework and Funding Target for Nutrition Investment in Africa. With a focus on refining tools and methodologies, stakeholders are primed for further engagement and action. As George Ouma, African Leaders for Nutrition Coordinator, remarked, "This meeting marks a significant moment in the progression of a multisectoral policy framework and the setting of financing targets. As we enter the consultative phase with the Member States, it's a critical opportunity for stakeholders to directly shape the future discourse of nutrition policies, programming, and financing in Africa."

The success of the 14th ATFFND meeting was fuelled by the participation of diverse stakeholders representing various sectors and epitomized a collaborative effort to reach a common goal. It also underscores the power of collaboration and collective action in addressing Africa's nutrition challenges. With renewed energy and commitment, stakeholders are poised to make significant strides.

As Africa continues to seek improved nutritional outcomes, stakeholders are united in their resolve to overcome barriers and drive progress towards a healthier, more prosperous Africa.
