Over 700 officer cadets, including international students from Tanzania and Mali, culminated their year of rigorous training at Uganda's Basic Military Training School with a prestigious commissioning ceremony. President Yoweri Museveni, the nation's leader and military head, officiated the event.
President Museveni lauded the graduating class for conquering the demanding program. He emphasized the comprehensive nature of their training, exposing them to the complexities of modern warfare from the outset. "We want them to understand the combined forces at play on the battlefield," he explained, referencing a recent combined arms exercise.
The President underscored the core principle of military service: defending the nation. He shared his experience transitioning from student activism to leading a resistance movement, highlighting the importance of selfless dedication. He further reassured the officers of ongoing improvements to their well-being, including housing, education, and healthcare.
The Ministry of Defence emphasized the program's dual purpose - fostering skilled commanders within Uganda and promoting Pan-African security. Minister Mateke stressed the importance of regional cooperation in addressing contemporary security challenges like terrorism and cyber threats. Joint training, she argued, fosters understanding and a unified response to these threats that transcend borders.
The Chief of Defence Forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, a graduate himself 25 years prior, addressed the newly commissioned officers with a blend of pride and caution. He acknowledged their strenuous training and congratulated them on their achievements. General Kainerugaba emphasized the significance of leadership as not just a title, but a profound responsibility. He urged them to uphold the highest ethical standards, warning against corruption, cowardice, and betrayal.
The ceremony, attended by ministers and dignitaries from partner nations, marked a significant milestone for these young officers. They now embark on their careers, prepared to defend Uganda and contribute to a more secure African continent.
