Kenya: Grand Celebration - UK High Commissioner to Kenya Hosts King's Birthday Party in Nairobi

On Thursday 13th June, 2024, the UK High Commissioner to Kenya, Neil Wigan, and his wife, Yael Banaji hosted a grand reception at their official residence in Muthaiga to mark His Majesty King Charles III's birthday. This event not only celebrated the monarch's birthday but also highlighted the enduring relationship between the United Kingdom and Kenya.

The event was attended by around 500 guests, including a diverse array of dignitaries, government officials, business leaders, politicians, diplomats, members of the media, British nationals residing in Kenya, and prominent figures from the fields of arts, education, research, business, and sports. The guest of honor for the evening was Kenya's Cabinet Secretary for Defence, Aden Duale.

The King's Birthday Party is a global celebration held by British High Commissions around the world. Although King Charles III's birthday falls on 14 November, his official birthday is marked on the second Saturday of June with the King's Birthday Parade, also known as Trooping the Colour, in London.

This year's celebration was particularly significant as it marked the High Commissioner's first King's Birthday Party in Nairobi.

While Her Majesty the Queen's connections to Kenya and the famous Treetops story are well known, His Majesty King Charles III also shares a rich history with the country. His visits to Kenya span several decades, starting in 1971 with the Princess Royal. He then returned in 1977 for a safari, and subsequently, in 1978 to attend the late President Jomo Kenyatta's funeral, and in 1987, he was back in Kenya, as part of a three-nation tour that included Swaziland (now Eswatini) and Malawi. Last year, King Charles III and his wife Queen Camilla made a state visit to Kenya from 31 October to 3 November 2023.

Living up to its reputation as the year's biggest celebration, the event featured a vibrant display of British food, drink, music, and culture. Several British companies who supported the event with sponsorship, showcased their products and services, exemplifying the UK's seal of excellence.
