Africa: Google Africa Apologizes for Offensive Tweet

Google Africa has apologized for a controversial tweet that attempted to humorously compare Africa's passion for football to "hide-and-seek with lions".

Google Africa has issued an apology following backlash over a controversial football-related tweet.

In a recently deleted post on Sunday, June 23, 2024, the Google in Africa account on X (formerly Twitter), posted saying, Africa's real passion is football and not dodging lions.

However, the company's humourous attempt backfired and was met with criticism instead of laughter.

"Here's Africa's most common game. No, it's not hide-and-seek with lions (although that sounds exciting). It's football," the tweet read.

However, the company retracted their statement and apologized on the same day.

"We sincerely apologize for our tweet today. Our intent was humour, but we missed the mark and offended many. We will strive to do better, it said.
