Kenya: Italian Embassy Hosts 1st Italy Meets Kenya Event in Nairobi

The Italian Trade Agency, a section of the Italian Embassy in Kenya, held its first ITALY MEETS KENYA: Wine, Food, and More event at the Trademark Hotel, Village Market. This celebration of cultural and culinary exchange brought together 24 Italian companies, creating a delightful experience for all attendees.

A curated selection of Italian wines was available for guests to sample, each accompanied by detailed tasting notes and tips from the distributors. From crisp, refreshing whites to bold, full-bodied reds, there was something to please every palate. The presence of knowledgeable sommeliers added an educational element to the experience, as they guided guests through the nuances of each wine, explaining the unique characteristics of different Italian wine regions.

Complementing the exquisite wines was an array of Italian dishes that showcased the diversity and richness of Italy's culinary heritage. Guests indulged in a variety of cheeses, creamy risottos, perfectly al dente pasta, and an assortment of antipasti. The two day event also featured master classes and chefs' live cooking demonstrations which were a hit, offering guests a glimpse into the artistry and passion behind each dish and wine.

Conversations flowed as smoothly as the wine, with attendees sharing their thoughts and experiences. Kenyan renowned sommelier Victoria Mulu-Munywoki remarked, "This event is a wonderful initiative. It's not just about the food and wine, but about understanding and appreciating each other's cultures."

Over the last couple of years, Italian wineries have shown an increasing interest in the region, aiming to popularize and grow the Italian wine and food culture in East Africa. According to Italy's Ambassador to Kenya, Roberto Natali, "Imports of Italian wine to Kenya increased by 17% in 2023, making Italy the third-largest source of wine in Kenya."
