Uganda: Who Is Wilberforce Sserunkuma, the Newly-Promoted Brigadier-General?

Colonel Wilberforce Sserunkuma was on July 10 promoted to the rank of Brigadier-General. But who is Wilberforce Sserunkuma?

Gen Sserunkuma served for six years where he played a key role in disarmament operations in Karamoja and maintained border security between Uganda, Kenya and South Sudan as a commander of the 405 brigade in Kotido for six years.

He was a Colonel at the time and a commander of the 405 brigade in the disarmament operations in Karamoja.

He later transferred served for one year as Acting Deputy Division Commader at the UPDF Second Division in Mbarara.

In June 2024, the UPDF strategic leadership and appointing authority reassigned him as the Deputy Commander at the Third Division in Moroto district.

Brigadier General Wilberforce Sserunkuma also participated in the NRA liberation struggles in the 1980s.

Major Isaac Oware, Third Division Information Officer, described Sserunkuma as a "battle hardened commander."

When reached for a comment, Brigadier General Sserunkuma expressed his gratitude to President Museveni and the UPDF leadership for recognizing his efforts.

"It's only God! I want to thank the President and the entire UPDF leadership for elevating me to the rank of Brigadier General," Sserunkuma said.
