Uganda: RDC Warns Kikuube Politicians Against Claiming Witch-Hunt to Escape Corruption Probe

The Kikuube Resident District Commissioner Amlan Tumusiime has warned politicians against claiming witch-hunt whenever they are arrested over corruption.

This followed the arrest of Kikuube LC5 vice chairperson, Vincent Opio who was detained at Kikuube central police station over extortion.

However, according to the DRC, whenever politicians are arrested over corruption, they use witch-hunt as a scapegoat but warned this will not work.

"It is very unfortunate that there is evidence that Opio solicited money claiming to help teachers and the money was sent through the wife's phone number, but a section of leaders in Kikuube have started saying it's political. Who is witch -hunting him? If he took the money let the law take its course," Tumusiime said.

He said it is high time all civil servants and political leaders cited in corruption scandals are arraigned to the Anti Corruption Court to send a signal about government's intent in fighting corruption.

"While I respect these normal courts, they can easily be influenced and people will easily ask for bail and they are out. It is better we commit these people to the anti corruption court in Kololo then people especially in local governments will understand that Uganda is no longer a joke when it comes to fighting corruption", Tumusiime said.

Peter Banura, the Kikuube district chairman said he feels ashamed presiding over a district that is always in the media over negative news.

"Every time you hear about Kikuube it's land grabbing, corruption, selling of jobs and when you go somewhere people see you as if you are the one who is not doing the job. Moving forward , we must be intentional in building a new Kikuube ," Banura said.

Albertine region police spokesperson, Julius Hakiza said investigations are still ongoing.

"We hope the file can be complete as soon as possible then we will take it to the attorney for perusal and guidance, so for any developments we will let you know" Hakiza said.

Others being investigated are Zulia Nyakahara, female Councilor for Kikuube Town Council also Secretary for finance, and Ruth Kobusinge the Buhimba Sub County Councilor also Secretary for social services.
