Uganda: Govt Resurrects Plans to Allocate Land to Akon

The revelation has sent chills down the spines of residents in Mpunge Sub-county, who insist the chunk of land covering eight villages belongs to them.

The government has resurrected plans to give out swathes of land in Mukono District to Senegalese American singer Akon.

The revelation has sent chills down the spines of residents in Mpunge Sub-county, who insist the chunk of land covering eight villages belongs to them.

The villages include Buleebi, Sango, Mbazi, Kyazi, Lulagwe, Muvo, Kiziru, and Kamwanyi.

In 2022, government secured 1 square mile of land in Mukono for Akon to construct a futuristic city worth $6 billion (Shs22 trillion).

The allocation of the land to the singer did not appease the locals and sparked several protests.

The project went cold, or so, the residents thought.

However, the locals were shocked when a document from Uganda Land Commission surfaced, notifying them of the incoming boundary opening of the contested land.

The residents led by the village chairpersons convened a meeting protesting against the Uganda Land Commission (ULC) document.

In the meeting, the residents vowed not to allow ULC to illegally survey their land.

Margret Nabbanja, a resident at Buleebi. fears the allocation will affect her livelihoods and her ancestry

since the land hosts her burial sites.

The residents also faulted their leaders, Members of parliament, district chairperson and councillors for not standing firm on the Akon land question

Sam Kyege, chairperson of Lulagwe village, noted that the land the government wants to give to an individual is occupied by residents.

He appealed to President Museveni to further analyse the truth of the matter.

Akon (right) and his girlfriend were serenaded by President Museveni and his family when they came to the country. Kyege said that government did not consult them as occupants. He suggested someone was misleading the government that the land is unoccupied.

"The land that the government is allocating to the Senegalese singer is fully occupied by people, the President should investigate the matter and not be be misled by self-seekers," Kyege said.

Mpunge Sub-county chairperson Frida Namyalo said she was concerned about the "broad daylight thuggery" by brokers from ULS claiming the land is for Akon.

Namyalo recocmended that government should look for other areas without occupants.

Mukono Resident District Commissioner Fatuma Ndisaba Nabittaka confirmed that the President had given the said the land to Akon.

Ms Ndisaba, however, advised the residents to bring those who have title deeds or land agreements to her office so that the government can compensate them.

She cautioned the aggrieved residents to desist from violence and implored them to let the surveyors do their work rather than resolving issues on their own.

Uganda Land Commission acting secretary Andrew Nyumba said they want to first survey the land to verify whether it is occupied.
