Uganda: Two New Witnesses Testify in Katanga Murder Case

The high-profile Katanga murder trial continued today with the prosecution presenting Peter Ogwang, a 34-year-old officer in charge at Bugolobi Police Station as its third witness.

Ogwang testified that on November 2, medical professional Charles Otai of Bugolobi Medical Centre called him about a suicide by shooting.

Ogwang responded immediately, finding Officer Samuel Musede at the scene.

Inside the bedroom, he said he saw a body on a new mattress, covered with a bedsheet, with blood on the floor and the bed, alongside a black pistol.

Ogwang stated that a daughter of the deceased, Patricia Kankwanzi, insisted the matter be reported as an accident.

However, Ogwang advised her to inform the Scene of Crime Officers (SOCO) for a thorough investigation.

Upon contacting CID Officer Bibiana Akong, she arrived from Jinja Road arrived with a Homicide and SOCO team. Martha and Amanyire were present during the investigation, with Ogwang recording his statement on November 5.

Timothy Nyangweso, a nephew of the deceased, also took the stand as the state's fourth witness.

He recounted that on the morning of November 2, his mother, the deceased's sister, was unable to reach Henry Katanga and asked Nyangweso to call his cousin, Martha Nkwanzi.

He testified that when he called Ms Nkwanzi, she answered after his third attempt to reach her and she claimed her father was sleeping.

When asked to redial the number recorded in his statement, it was a wrong number. He was further given call logs of Ms Nkwanzi's phone activities as submitted by the prosecution.

However, there was no trace of Nyangweso's phone number on November 2. Nyangweso recorded his police statement on January 8, 2024, after Nakawa court proceedings for the four co-accused; Martha Nkwanzi, Patricia Kankwanzi, their househelp George Amanyire and Otai.

The court proceedings have been adjourned to Friday, July 12, 2024, to summon additional witnesses.

Despite the defence's request to proceed due to Molly's custody status, the court granted a brief adjournment as requested by the prosecution to ensure all witness testimonies are adequately presented.
