Kenya: Eldoret to Get City Status in August, State House Announces

Nairobi — President William Ruto is set to preside over the conferment of city status to Eldoret Municipality.

State House, in a letter addressed to Uasin Gishu governor Jonathan Bii, announced that the municipality has met all statutory conditions outlined in the Urban Areas and Cities Act, culminating in the approval for city status by the Senate.

"The President may, on the resolution of the Senate, confer the status of a city on a municipality that meets the criteria set out in Section 5, by grant of a charter in the prescribed form," read the letter in part.

The installation ceremony is scheduled to take place in Eldoret on August 8, 2024, a significant occasion for the residents of Eldoret, symbolizing enhanced municipal status and potential for accelerated development.

The conferment of city status is anticipated to bring about increased investment opportunities, improved infrastructure, and heightened administrative capabilities to Eldoret, positioning it as a hub for growth and urbanization in the region.

The senate had in January given President William Ruto a not to confer Eldoret city status, a move that will make it Kenya's 5th city.

The other cities are Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, and Nakuru, which received city status in December 2021.
