Kenya: Containers Handled At Mombasa Port to Grow By 200,000 in 2024

Nairobi — The Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) expects container handling at the Port of Mombasa to grow by 200,000 this year to 1.8 million.

KPA Managing Director William Ruto said that in 2024, the growth will be the highest in the past three years.

In 2023, the port handled 1.6 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), a significant increase from the 1.45 million TEUs recorded in 2022.

Ruto attributed this success to the port's modernization efforts and a dedicated workforce, which have in turn elevated the port's operational efficiency.

Ruto spoke after announcing the arrival of the second Evergreen shipping registered vessel at the port of Mombasa.

In a statement, KPA said the arrival of MV Ever Vim highlights the growing confidence that major shipping lines have in the port.

The vessel's captain, Liang Wei, was honored with a certificate of first call from the KPA managing director, William Ruto, to mark the milestone.

"A call to the Port of Mombasa by MV Ever Vim, a vessel owned by Evergreen Shipping line, underscores the growing confidence that major shipping lines have in the Port of Mombasa solidifying its position as a preferred port of call. Recently, Mombasa welcomed MV EVER VOW, another first-caller vessel from the same shipping line," KPA stated.
