Liverpool's Pre — Season tour of the United States has given some academy stars a chance to shine, and Trey Nyoni did just that in a victory over Real Betis.
Nyoni was one of a number of youngsters involved as Reds manager Arne Slot waits to welcome back senior players who made it to the latter stages of the Copa America and European Championships. He made his debut under Jurgen Klopp last season, and is attempting to make his case for more minutes under new manager Slot.
The teenager played a part as Szoboszlai scored the only goal of the game. He fed the ball through to the Hungarian from deep, before Szoboszlai exchanged passes with Mohamed Salah and then found the bottom corner. It was Slot's first victory as manager, following a behind-closed-doors friendly defeat against Preston North End the previous week. The Reds have two more matches in the US, against Arsenal and Manchester United, before taking on Sevilla at Anfield on August 11.
"It was a good pass from Trey," Szoboszlai told club media. "It's important that the No.6s see us and use us also. And of course, Mo knows how to play these balls.
"I like him a lot, he is a really offensive player," the former RB Leipzig star added when describing Nyoni. "I just said on the bench to (Jarell) Quansah, you can't even foul him because of his movements and stuff like this. "Everybody saw in the second half, Nat (Phillips) was a centre-back but otherwise everybody was young and almost none of them were 20.
But they still did a good job, didn't concede a goal and had chances. So yeah, a good future." Slot also praised Nyoni's display after the win.
"I think he did really well today but it was only an hour," the former Feyenoord manager said.
"He was one of the reasons why we scored the goal, because he turned really quickly and [played] a spot-on pass in between the lines. And he was also involved in the biggest chance in the second half.
"So he did well. But he's just turned 17 and his body has to grow, and we are really careful with him. -- Mirror.
