Uganda: LOP Ssenyonyi Concerned Over Snub in Regional Parliament Sitting Preps

7 August 2024

The Leader of the opposition in Parliament Joel Ssenyonyi has revealed that the Opposition in the House is being excluded from the ongoing preparations for the four regional Parliamentary sittings in Gulu, Mbarara, Mbale and Masaka.

"This is unacceptable and undermines the transparency and accountability of the process," said Ssenyonyi.

Ssenyonyi criticized the allocation of shs5 billion for each regional sitting, saying, "This expenditure is unnecessary and wasteful. We are talking about 20 billion shillings for four regional sittings, which could be better utilized elsewhere."

He advised Parliament's leadership to empower committees instead of organizing regional sittings, stating, "These regional sittings are a burden to the taxpayer. We should be focusing on empowering our committees to do their work effectively."

Ssenyonyi also expressed frustration at not being invited to commission meetings.

"I'm still angry about not being invited to these meetings. It's clear that there's a lack of transparency and accountability."

He further alleged that the delay in completing new Parliament chambers is due to "clandestine dealings" between Parliament's leadership and building owners that are being rented to house offices of some MPs, saying, "We suspect that there are some underhand dealings going on, and that's why the new Parliament chambers are delayed."
