Nairobi — Cabinet Secretary for Energy Opiyo Wandayi is focused on expanding Kenya's power infrastructures despite numerous challenges facing the sub-sector.
Wandayi said there have been delays in the implementation of such projects, attributing them to meagre financial resources.
"We appreciate the challenges that could still be there. If we work together, we will be able to enhance our velocity for us to realize the potential of the country in terms of energy and transmission and eventually the cost to the consumer in the shortest time possible," Wandayi spoke during the handover ceremony at the KETRACO's Isinya Substation presided over by ex-CS Davis Chirchir.
The CS added that the KETRACO's Isinya Substation has a capacity of 1,000 megawatts, with 400 megawatts already connected.
"Today being my first day in office since my appointment, I'm happy to announce a great achievement in the electricity sector. We are aware that our Nairobi and Mombasa electricity consumers have been enduring blackouts and power disruptions, and this will not happen again," said Wandayi.
Isinya substation comes as a relief to consumers in Nairobi and Mombasa who have over the years been inconvenienced by frequent power disruptions.
The 220/400 kilovolt substation located in Kajiado County is the second biggest substation after Suswa and is connected to the Olkaria geothermal fields through the Suswa substation.
