Kenya: Ignore Impostor Facebook Page 'Mwananchi Credit Motorcycle On Loans' Offering Easy Credit for Motorbikes in Kenya

Ignore impostor Facebook page 'Mwananchi credit motorcycle on loans' offering easy credit for motorbikes in Kenya

IN SHORT: This Facebook page uses the name of a Kenyan financial institution to promise users easy credit for motorbikes. But beware, this is just another imposter out to defraud you.

The Facebook page Mwananchi credit motorcycle on loans promises Kenyans motorbikes on credit.

It claims that users can pay a deposit of KSh11,000 for new motorbikes and KSh9,000 for used ones and get them "within 24hrs".

The page also offers other products such as tuk-tuks, both passenger and cargo, on credit. Tuk-tuks are three-wheeled taxis. It says "deliveries done countrywide within 6hours".

The page uses the logo of Mwananchi Credit Limited, a Kenyan financial institution, as its profile picture and cover photo.

Its posts have been republished in Facebook groups with thousands of members.

But is this page and its offers legit? We checked.

Imposter page

Africa Check noticed that the page had reposted its adverts dozens of times in Facebook groups. This is a common trend with fake pages running bogus adverts and desperate for attention. Genuine companies rarely repost their adverts across Facebook groups.

The page also relies on unbranded photos to advertise the offers. Professionally run businesses have unique logos and colours on their adverts to help identify them.

The page's adverts are repeated, with odd punctuation and randomly capitalised words. This is uncharacteristic of adverts from legit institutions.

The page lists 0102428213 as its official phone number. But this number is not listed on Mwananchi's official website. The company previously told Africa Check that its official contact number was 0709147000. This number is still available on the website.

The company's official Facebook page Mwananchi Credit Limited posts no such offers.

The Facebook page in question and its adverts are bogus.
