Arusha, — Honourable Justice Gaswaga was elected as Judge of the Court on 19th July 2024 in Accra -Ghana during the forty-fifth (45th) Ordinary Session of the Executive Council of the African Union.
The swearing-in ceremony took place on Monday 2 September 2024 at the seat of the Court in Arusha, Tanzania, at the commencement of the 74th Ordinary Session of the Court which will run from 2-27 September 2024.
President of the African Court Honourable Lady Justice Imani Daud Aboud welcomed Justice Gaswaga, noting that his extensive judicial and legal expertise and dedication to human rights makes him a valuable addition to the Bench thereby strengthening the Court's capacity to fulfil its mandate.
"We are confident that his contributions will greatly enhance the Court's ability to deliver justice and protect the rights of all African citizens," said Lady Justice Aboud.
In his remarks after the ceremony, Justice Gaswaga expressed his deep honour and commitment to serve on the African Court and highlighted the critical role of the Court in safeguarding the rights of African citizens and promoting justice on the African continent.
"I am deeply humbled by this appointment and pledge to contribute to the African Court's mission of upholding justice and human rights for all," said Justice Gaswaga.

The African Court on Human and Peoples' Rights (AfCHPR) is a continental court established by African Union Member States to ensure the protection of human and peoples' rights in Africa. It is based in Arusha, Tanzania.
