LUUKA | The territorial police in Luuka District are investigating a hit-and-run accident that claimed three lives at Naimuli village, Nawampiti Sub-County, on Wednesday.
The accident, which killed the victims on the spot, involved an unidentified motor vehicle and a motorcycle with registration number UFA 498C, a Bajaj Boxer.
Busoga North Police spokesperson, ASP Michael Kasadha, identified the deceased as Jackson Ngobi, 46, Joram Mugabi, 18, and Brian Mwase, 23. The crash reportedly occurred around 3 p.m.
The rider of the motorcycle, whose identity was not disclosed at the time of the report, survived with injuries and was taken to Jinja Regional Referral Hospital in Jinja City for medical treatment.
According to ASP Kasadha, preliminary investigations suggest the crash was a head-on collision between a motor vehicle and a motorcycle. "Preliminary investigations indicate that on Wednesday evening, at about 6:30 p.m., an unknown vehicle collided head-on with motorcycle registration number UFA 498C, killing three passengers instantly. The bend at the accident scene is suspected to have contributed to the tragic impact," he said in a statement.
ASP Kasadha told the Nile Post that Ngobi and Mugabi were passengers on the motorcycle, while Mwase had reportedly fallen off the yet-to-be-identified motor vehicle.
A team of traffic officers visited the scene, and the bodies were taken to Kiyunga Health Center IV mortuary for post-mortem examinations.
The motorcycle involved in the crash has been impounded at the police station, pending inspection by the Inspector of Vehicles (IOV).
ASP Kasadha added that a serious manhunt is underway to locate the unidentified vehicle and apprehend the driver to assist in further investigations.
"The police are committed to ensuring that the driver responsible is found and brought to justice to provide closure to the families affected by this tragic incident," Kasadha stated.
