Uganda: Mubende District Councillors Demand Action Over Poor Sanitation At Headquarters

6 September 2024

Councillors in Mubende District have raised concerns over the poor state of sanitation facilities at the district headquarters, expressing frustration over the unsanitary conditions of the toilets, which they say pose a health risk to both staff and visitors.

Samuel Mayanja, a councillor representing East Division in Mubende Municipality, criticized the state of the latrines, describing them as a health hazard.

"When you enter these toilets, you can see how dirty they are, and our bosses are just ignoring them. If this continues, we risk catching more diseases," Mayanja said, adding that their repeated calls for better maintenance have been ignored.

"We even passed a budget for cleaning the toilets, but there's been no accountability from the responsible parties."

Margaret Navubya, a councillor for Kiyuni Sub-county, echoed these concerns, calling the situation a disgrace for district leaders and officials.

"This place hosts different people every day, including our leaders, yet they seem oblivious to the filthiness of the toilets," Navubya remarked.

"Due to the foul smell, many of us have resorted to using nearby facilities. I urge the concerned authorities to intervene."

Emmanuel Kabanda, a councillor representing Kaloonga Sub-county, called on the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) of Mubende District to take immediate action.

"The water systems in these toilets are no longer functioning, making it impossible to wash hands after use. The council allocated a budget for cleaning, but it appears the implementers are reluctant," Kabanda said.

Responding to the concerns, Aisha Ayebare, Chairperson of the Education and Health Committee for the district, stated that measures are being put in place to address the issue.

"We have resolved that a team will be designated to continuously clean the toilets and provide water for handwashing to maintain high levels of hygiene at the district headquarters," Ayebare said.

The councillors' outcry highlights growing frustration over the lack of attention to basic hygiene standards at Mubende District Headquarters, prompting calls for accountability and immediate action to ensure a safe and sanitary environment
