Uganda: Pakwach MP Advocates for Mandatory Medical Checkups for Legislators

18 September 2024

The Woman Mp for Pakwach Jane Avur Pacuto, is pushing for mandatory medical checkups for Members of Parliament.

Her proposal, addressed to Parliament's leadership, aims to have doctors regularly visit MPs at Parliament, despite the existence of medical insurance and an in-house clinic.

"As legislators, we need to prioritize our health to effectively serve our constituents," Jane Avur emphasized. "Regular medical checkups will help identify potential health issues before they become life-threatening."

This call to action comes after the tragic loss of former Kisoro District Woman Representative Sarah Mateke, who passed away due to heart complications.

Jane Avur hopes that proactive measures will minimize similar sudden deaths among MPs.

"We cannot afford to lose any more colleagues due to preventable health issues," she stressed. "It's time for us to take proactive measures to safeguard our health and well-being."
