Uganda: UCC, Police Strengthen Efforts Against Misinformation

17 October 2024

The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has announced plans to strengthen its collaboration with law enforcement to combat the spread of fake news.

During the launch of the #Dismis initiative at Next Media, Nyombi Thembo, Director of the UCC, emphasised the role of coordinated efforts in addressing the issue of false information that is increasingly prevalent on digital platforms.

"Our collaboration with the police is also going to be enhanced because most of the fake news is outright crime," Thembo stated, underscoring the need for more rigorous measures against those who spread misinformation.

The "Dismis campaign", backed by Next Media and the Ministry of ICT and National Guidance, aims to raise awareness about the dangers of fake news and encourage responsible content sharing.

Thembo expressed gratitude to Next Media for launching the initiative, highlighting that their efforts align with the government's commitment to safeguarding the public from misleading information. "Thankfully, we have a very supportive ministry," he added, emphasising the importance of institutional support in achieving the campaign's goals.

As digital media continues to shape the flow of information in Uganda, the UCC's partnership with law enforcement and media houses marks a significant step in the fight against misinformation and its harmful effects on society.
