A platform that brings together all national regulators in the country has been launched.
Named the National Regulators Association of Uganda, the platform was launched by the Prime Minister, Robinah Nabbanja at Kampala Sheraton Hotel on Thursday.
Speaking during the launch, Nabbanja said the platform will enhance regulatory effectiveness, helping government to achieve national aspirations outlined in the National Development Plan III , Vision 2040 and the NRM manifesto among others.
"This launch therefore represents a key step towards building a strong, cohesive and effective regulatory environment that will contribute significantly to Uganda's social economic transformation," Nabbanja said.
"By fostering unit among regulatory bodies, the association will improve efficiency, minimise resource wastage, mitigate duplications and ensure that our regulatory frameworks are aligned with national policies , best international practices and global standards."
Nabbanja said this synergy will help address challenges such as fragmented approaches and misaligned priorities , enabling better implementation of government programs and improving service delivery.
According to the Prime Minister, in an era of digitilization and globalization, regulators must anticipate and adapt to emerging trends and technologies and that the new platform will help on this goal.
"The National Regulators Association will equip Uganda's regulatory bodies with the necessary skills and capabilities to navigate these changes, foster innovation while safeguarding public interest," she said.
Eng.Ziria Tibalwa Waako , the chairperson of the interim committee of the National Regulators Association said their mission is to facilitate the harmonisation of regulatory affairs and practices and supporting best practices , innovation, collaboration and knowledge sharing .
"Our priortity areas are to deliver accurate and objective analyses and decisions to ensure transparency and accountability of regulatory affairs as well as actively engaging with stakeholders in support of a dynamic regulatory system," Eng. Tibalwa said.
Dr. Wasagali Sarah Kanaabi, the Electricity Regulatory Authority board chairperson said ERA spearheaded the formation of the association in a bid to align and synergise efforts to achieve strategic aspirations for government, adding that this is driven by the need for collaboration and unity.
"The National Regulatory Association is poised to provide a platform where regulatory bodies can collaborate , understand each other's roles, leveraging each other's strengths and synergise their efforts to support Uganda's strategic objectives, " Dr.Wasagali said.
"By coming together, we will not only enhance the effectiveness of our regulatory activities but also save public resources, improve efficiency of government programs and contribute significantly to Uganda's socio economic transformation."
