ZimParks Director of Commercial Services, Nomsa Chitsaka's traditional wedding held over the weekend in Wedza was off to a chaotic start after a local Private Investigator arrived at the venue, claiming the bride and her fiancé were still legally married to other people.
The investigator Tafadzwa Chidawa revealed he had been hired by Chitsaka's fiance's wife. In a video that has since gone viral on social media, Chidawa said "both of the individuals are still legally married".
Although Chidawa did not name either party involved, the bride-to-be was identified as Nomsa Chitsaka, a director at the Zimbabwe Parks & Wildlife Management Authority.
The Zimparks Director had had a lavish white wedding and two children from her other marriage. With the marriage still legally valid, Chitsaka is prohibited from marrying another person, as doing so would constitute the crime of bigamy. Under Zimbabwean law, bigamy is the act of marrying another person while knowingly still married.
Chitsaka and her fiancé, should they proceed with the marriage, could be fined or even face prison time.
Approaching Chitsaka's father directly, Chidawa warned him of the potential consequences. "If this marriage goes ahead," he stated, "both parties could face charges of bigamy."
He cited Zimbabwe's Criminal Law Codification and Reform Act, which prohibits a person from remarrying while still legally married.
According to Chidawa, when Chitsaka learned of his presence at the ceremony, she attempted to contact a top officer in the Zimbabwe Republic Police for help in pushing the ceremony forward.
However, Chidawa revealed that the senior officer declined to intervene, stating he "would not assist in breaking the law."
