Technology at the service of health. Morocco is redefining the way healthcare is delivered, making it more accessible. At GITEX GLOBAL, held in Dubai from 14 to 18 October, Moroccan government representatives and professionals explained their country's vision.

"Morocco has embarked on a far-reaching transformation of its healthcare system, placing technological innovation at the heart of this reform. We are already witnessing the direct impact of this innovation on the extent of access to healthcare, particularly in remote areas. Telemedicine and digital mobile units enable patients to benefit from specialist services without having to travel," said Prof. Khalid Aït Taleb, Minister for Health and Social Protection.

This modern, efficient healthcare system is based on the ability to share data securely and seamlessly between different services and players. This North African country is committed to developing an integrated healthcare system by adopting the shared medical file, strengthening continuity of care while adopting international best practice in cyber-security. In Morocco, this system is already under way in sectors such as radiology, oncology and emergency management.

The key role of AI

Artificial intelligence has a key role to play in this modernisation process, and is having a revolutionary impact on the way healthcare is delivered. It is considerably improving diagnosis, optimising care pathways and enabling treatments to be more personalised. Moroccan start-ups are developing innovative solutions and new technologies offer enormous potential for research and development. These innovations are helping healthcare professionals to make more informed decisions, anticipate complications and offer better quality care to their patients.

"New challenges have emerged since Covid. Today, we have to prepare for other pandemics, antibiotic resistance and climate change, all of which have an impact on health. Technology allows us to respond to these needs and major challenges," explains Mohamed Benouda, founder of ABA Technology Group.

He says that throughout the life cycle of a human being, a person accumulates information and risks of disease, and it is important that this notion is taken into account in a healthcare system. Therapeutic medicine, emerging technologies (connected watches, telemedicine), as well as the physical world and the digital world will come together to help treat a patient in the best possible conditions and with all possible data.

"Medicine X.0 is a medicine that constantly reassesses and reinvents itself. We are seeing a change in mindset. Before, medicine worked to increase life expectancy. The medicine of the future will be more predictive, personalised, preventive, participative, proven (based on science) and plural," explains Mohamed Benouda.
