The president of the Uganda People's Congress (UPC), Jimmy Akena, has taken a swipe at the ruling NRM government for its alleged neglect of Kisoro, accusing it of failing to improve the lives of residents in the district.
Akena made these remarks while campaigning for UPC's candidate, Mable Ingabire, in the Kisoro Woman MP by-election.
Speaking at multiple campaign stops, Akena addressed voters at Kibugu Trading Centre in Bufumbira South, where he condemned the poor living conditions in Kisoro, describing them as evidence of the NRM's unfulfilled promises.
He emphasised UPC's commitment to public welfare
"Your poor living conditions are a testament that NRM has neglected you. The legacy of UPC for the people's well-being is self-explanatory,"he said.
Akena praised Ingabire as "a woman of substance," urging voters to support her in the by-election.
He expressed confidence in her leadership, asserting that her election would be a step towards achieving UPC's vision for a better Uganda.
"We have the right vision for the people of Uganda," he assured voters at Mataba-Kidandali Trading Centre.
Reflecting on Uganda's political landscape, Akena lamented the growing influence of money in elections, suggesting that citizens are swayed by small financial incentives rather than genuine political ideals.
"This by-election highlights the desperation of citizens where any small token seems to secure support," he said.

"Instead of sharing ideas on how we can improve lives, the discourse has shifted. This is a testament to where we are as a country and shows the need for a reset."
In his speech, Akena criticized NRM's electoral practices, citing alleged rigging in recent primaries and general elections, which he said has marred the ruling party's reputation.
"This rigging has to stop," he declared, calling for free and fair elections.
Since November 6, UPC and Ingabire have been campaigning across various parts of Kisoro, starting in Bufumbira South, then moving to Bufumbira East, and with plans to campaign in Bufumbira North today.
The campaigns have focused on mobilizing support as UPC seeks to strengthen its presence in the district.
UPC's recent by-election victories in Oyam North County and Dokolo District Woman MP have boosted the party's optimism, with growing local support in Kisoro adding to their momentum.
The Electoral Commission has confirmed that polling for the by-election will be held on Thursday, November 14.
