Uganda: Mityana Resident Arrested for Violating Court Orders in Land Dispute

14 November 2024

Residents in Mityana district are increasingly alarmed by the rise in land disputes affecting their communities.

In a recent development, State Minister for Lands, Sam Mayanja, held a meeting with residents, where they raised concerns about Andrew Nyanzi, a resident of Kalangalo village, who allegedly evicted individuals from their property in defiance of court orders.

The dispute centres around four acres of land in Kalangalo village, reportedly owned by the late Rev Isaaya Mugisha.

According to local accounts, Nyanzi, a former friend of the deceased, allegedly used deceptive means to claim ownership of the land and subsequently evicted the late Rev Mugisha's children, despite a court ruling upholding their right to the property.

During a community meeting at Kiryokya Health Centre, residents informed Minister Mayanja of ongoing land fraud cases affecting local families.

Addressing the gathering, Mayanja warned Nyanzi about the consequences of disregarding legal directives.

When Nyanzi refused to vacate the disputed land, the minister instructed police officers to arrest him on the spot.

Minister Mayanja reiterated the government's commitment to addressing land fraud nationwide, assuring residents that authorities would hold offenders accountable.

He highlighted a recent case in which a sub-county chairman was required to hand over the village stamp for alleged misuse in land transactions.

Nyanzi is currently detained at Mityana Police Station and faces charges including violating court orders.
