The Police in Kitagwenda District are investigating the gruesome mob killing of two men accused of stealing coffee.
The incident, which occurred on November 15, 2024, in Kitonzi A Cell, Kitonzi Parish in Ntara Sub-County, has shocked the community.
The deceased, identified as Robert Mwebaze, 26, and Lauben Niwabiine, 30, were both residents of the same village.
The case has been registered under reference number VIDE KTD CRB 396/024.
According to the Kitagwenda Police Commander (DPC) SP Bashir Bakulumpagi, it is alleged that the two men were caught stealing coffee from the plantation owned by Junior Kabwentondo at around midday.
"They were apprehended by residents and taken to the home of the area LC1 chairperson for further action," Bakulumpagi said.
However, the situation quickly escalated.
"Instead of following due process, the residents resorted to mob action. The suspects were beaten severely and left in critical condition," Bakulumpagi said.
He added that the mob dispersed after leaving the men unconscious.
The two victims were reportedly abandoned without medical assistance and later succumbed to their injuries around 7 p.m.
Their bodies were taken to Ntara Health Center IV for postmortem.
"This act of mob justice is not only illegal but also undermines the rule of law and endangers the community," Bakulumpagi emphasized.
He urged the public to report any suspected crimes to the authorities instead of taking matters into their own hands.
The police have launched a manhunt for those involved in the attack.
"We are actively pursuing all suspects in this case and will ensure they are held accountable. Such behavior is unacceptable and will not be tolerated," Bakulumpagi stated firmly.
The incident has reignited concerns over the prevalence of mob justice in rural areas, where residents often express frustration with perceived delays in the justice system.
Police have called on local leaders to promote civic education and encourage lawful ways of resolving disputes.
"This is a tragic incident that could have been avoided if the right procedures were followed. We must all work together to prevent such senseless acts," Bakulumpagi stated.
