The National Unity Platform (NUP) has once again honored the memory of those who lost their lives during the violent protests that erupted in November 2020 following the arrest of party president Robert Kyagulanyi while campaigning in Luuka District.
This year's commemorative prayers were held at the party's headquarters in Kavule on Monday.
The event featured a special mass led by Reverend Father Angelo Okwairoth from Mulago Catholic Parish, who commended the NUP for consistently remembering their fallen comrades.
"It is commendable that the NUP leadership has dedicated time to pray for departed comrades" Father Angelo said.
Families of those who died or were detained during the protests expressed their ongoing grief.
Widows, orphans, and grieving mothers shared tearful testimonies about the hardships they face in the absence of their loved ones.
In his address, NUP President Robert Kyagulanyi urged elected leaders to always remember the sacrifices of the victims when making decisions in their respective offices.
He reminded them of the heavy price paid by some in the pursuit of democracy.
"People lost their lives, others were arrested, and some disappeared without a trace, as you serve in your positions, never forget the people who suffered in the process," Kyagulanyi said.
The death toll from the November 2020 protests remains a contentious issue, with a notable discrepancy between the official government figures and NUP's own records.
While the government reported fewer casualties, the NUP maintains that the number of deaths was much higher.
As the prayers concluded, attendees reflected on the continued quest for justice and accountability for the victims of the 2020 unrest.
NUP leaders reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring that their sacrifices are not forgotten.
