The African Natural Resources Management and Investment Centre (ECNR) will hold a virtual high-level policy dialogue on 29 November 2024, titled "Leveraging Africa's Extractive Resources for Green Transitions and Structural Transformation." This event will explore the impacts of global shifts driven by green transitions, climate change, and energy security on Africa's extractive sectors. It will serve as a platform to discuss and identify strategic options, policy pathways, and industrial practices that enable Africa to harness its vast extractive resources for green transition and structural transformation.
Africa's extensive extractive reserves are foundational to the continent's industrialization and economic development. Coupled with abundant renewable energy potential from solar, wind, and hydro, Africa is uniquely positioned to play a pivotal role in the global energy transition. Sustainable management of these resources can drive industrial growth, foster structural transformation, and support Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), all while contributing minimally to global emissions. However, shifting regional and global trends in energy transition, sustainability, and development goals are rapidly reshaping Africa's extractive sector. Policymakers must adapt swiftly to this evolving, competitive landscape. This webinar will examine key policy pathways to unlock the full potential of Africa's extractive sector, addressing challenges such as attracting investment, improving infrastructure, and implementing effective policies for sustainable, green growth.
The event will bring together thought leaders and experts from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), African Union Energy Commission (AFREC), African Union African Minerals Development Center (AU-AMDC), Chatham House, International Gas Union (IGU), and Natural Resource Governance Institute (NRGI) to explore solutions and strategies for maximizing the potential of extractive resources in a climate-constrained world.
The webinar will be conducted primarily in English, with simultaneous interpretation services in French.
