Uganda: Colonel Nakalema Challenges Stakeholders to Tackle Graduate Unemployment Sustainably

21 November 2024

The Head of the State House Investors Protection Unit, Col. Edith Nakalema, has called on academicians, and stakeholders from both private and public sectors to devise sustainable solutions to address graduate unemployment in Uganda.

Col. Nakalema emphasized that employment creation should not be viewed as a sole responsibility of the government. She urged all key players in the employment sector to collaborate and focus on the 7 Dimensions of Security, which include economic, food, health, environmental, personal, community, and political stability.

" graduates deserve attention since they have all they need to develop the economy, consider the 7 dimensions to not affect international relations and economic development " Nakalema says

Nakalema further highlighted the importance of transforming Uganda's workforce by equipping graduates with entrepreneurial skills rather than training them solely to seek jobs.

"We need to nurture graduates who are entrepreneurial-oriented and capable of creating opportunities for themselves and others," Nakalema stated.

The Director lung institute Mulago hospital, Professor Bruce Kirenga says they are yet to come up with a report under the graduate employment model suggesting proposals on how to curb the problem. "Among the proposals are placements for graduates in government entities, providing graduates with start up Capital, scholarships for those who want to upgrade academically among others.", Prof Kirenga explained.

This call aims to create a multi-sectoral approach to curbing unemployment while fostering sustainable development in the country.
