Uganda: Sniffer Dog Leads to Arrest of Kagadi Teen Over Theft of a Pig

28 November 2024

Julius Hakiza, the Albertine Region police spokesperson, noted a rise in livestock thefts as the festive season approaches.

Police in Kagadi District have arrested a 19-year-old boy over for allegedly stealing a pig valued at Shs400,000.

The pig, weighing 45 kilogrames, belonged to Joseph Tibenda of Nyangereka Village.

The theft was reported by Tibenda to the local council, which in turn involved the Police.

A police dog was brought to aid in the investigation, leading officers to teen's home.

According to Pascal Tumukugize, secretary of the Nyangereka Local Council, the suspect later confessed and directed authorities to Mambugu, where he had abandoned the stolen pig.

Julius Hakiza, the Albertine Region police spokesperson, noted a rise in livestock thefts as the festive season approaches.

"Livestock theft is becoming increasingly common, particularly among young people. It's disheartening," Hakiza said.

Local leaders, including Tumukugize, have expressed concerns over nighttime activities in the area. Plans are underway to collaborate with police on night patrols to deter criminal activity.

"We see many people wandering aimlessly at night. These patrols aim to apprehend such wrongdoers," Tumukugize said.

Lillian Ruteraho, Kagadi Resident District Commissioner, attributed such crimes to poor parenting.

"It's troubling to see a 19-year-old involved in theft. Parents must focus on instilling good morals in their children and guiding them to become responsible members of society," Ruteraho urged.

As the festive season draws closer, authorities are calling on communities to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to curb rising crime rates.
