press release

Members of the Operation Vala Umgodi Task team operating in the Vhembe District arrested a 54-year-old female illegal mining suspect and six other undocumented foreign nationals , aged between 31 and 45, on Monday, 02 December 2024, in the Malamulele policing area.

The operation followed a tip-off about the female suspect engaged in the processing of suspected precious metals in Dinga village. Upon arrival, officers searched an unoccupied house where the suspect was involved in the illegal mining activity. They confiscated a bucket containing precious minerals, two spades, and a hoe.

The operation continued in the surrounding area, leading to the apprehension of six male undocumented foreign nationals at different locations.

The Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, commended the members for their ongoing efforts in combating illegal mining activities and urged them to intensify their operations during the festive season.

The suspects are scheduled to appear before the Malamulele Magistrate's Court on Wednesday, 04 December 2024, facing charges of illegal mining and contravention of the Immigration Act.
