Nigeria: Afenifere Visits Dele Farotimi, Faults Magistrate for Denying Him Bail

14 December 2024

Some members of the Pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, on Friday, visited detained human rights activist, Mr Dele Farotimi at the Correctional Centre in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State.

They also expressed disappointment over the refusal of the Magistrate to grant him bail.

Afenifere's Deputy Secretary General, Alade Rotimi-John stated that the group's National Leader, Chief Ayo Adebanjo sent the delegation to visit Farotimi, who is a member of its National caucus

Rotimi-John, in a statement said: "On behalf of our National Leader, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, the National Caucus Leaders of Af¹nif¹r¹ paid a solidarity visit to Mr Dele Farotimi, who is a member of the National Caucus of Af¹nif¹r¹, at the Ado-Ekiti Correctional Centre to deliver a private message from Chief Adebanjo and to enquire about his well being.

"The National Caucus Leaders expressed their disappointment at the travesty occasioned by the Chief Magistrate who presided over the case on Tuesday when he declined to see the need to give urgent attention to an application for bail for a bailable offence, particularly since it is already a deeply disturbing miscarriage of justice for Mr. Farotimi to have been remanded to the Correctional Centre in the first place. Af¹nif¹r¹ will wait to consider its next line of action after the ruling of the Chief Magistrate on December 20.

"The National Caucus Leaders of Af¹nif¹r¹ in attendance at the Correctional Centre today (on Friday) included Chief Supo Shonibare, Basorun Segun Sanni, Mrs. Nike Olujembola, Mrs. Toyin Falade, Pastor Olayemi Olajuyinnu and Mr. Tunde Babarinde among others."
