West Budama Central Constituency turned a vibrant shade of yellow as Hon. Jacob Oboth Oboth, the Minister of Defense and Veteran Affairs, donated 100-seater yellow tents to each of the 23 parishes within his constituency.
The event, held at Siwa Primary School playgrounds, also featured the donation of a public address system and two Tata lorries to facilitate the transportation of these items for community events, particularly funerals.
The minister, represented by the Nabiyonga Sub-County Chairperson, Okello William, said the initiative was aimed at easing the financial burden on residents during functions.
Thousands of residents gathered at the event to witness and receive the donations, which were praised as timely and impactful.
In his remarks, Okello explained that while the minister could only provide the tents, additional efforts were needed to make them fully operational.
This led to a fundraising drive at the same event to help purchase chairs that would accompany the tents. Local groups enthusiastically contributed millions of shillings toward this cause.
"The minister said he can only afford to provide the tents for now, but we cannot use them without chairs. This is why we have initiated this fundraising drive to enable us to purchase chairs," Okello stated.
For residents like Richard Ochieno, the donations are a lifeline. He noted that hiring public address systems and other equipment for events often costs between Shs 300,000 and Shs 400,000, forcing families to sell land or other properties to cover burial expenses.
The initiative has been hailed as a major relief for locals, who now have access to resources that will reduce the financial strain associated with organising functions. Many beneficiaries expressed gratitude to Minister Oboth Oboth for addressing their pressing needs.
The event underscored the minister's commitment to community empowerment and drew widespread appreciation from the constituency.
