The Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, the Most Rev Stephen Kazimba Mugalu, has called on legislators to revisit the Marriage Bill, emphasizing the need for further consultations on the matter.
He made the remarks while delivering his Christmas message at his residence in Namirembe.
"We need to put more emphasis on the Marriage Bill, as cases of domestic violence are on the rise, and men are increasingly becoming victims, which was not the case before," he said.
The Marriage Bill was introduced in Parliament on October 3rd by the Woman MP for Tororo, Sarah Opendi.
One of the key provisions of the bill requires that partners share their properties, with penalties of up to three years in prison or a fine of Shs10 million for those who refuse to comply.
Since its introduction, the bill has faced criticism from married couples, prompting Archbishop Kazimba to comment on the matter.
In his message, the Archbishop also urged caution as people prepare to travel to their villages during the festive season.
"We urge public drivers to be vigilant on the roads. Security and traffic officers should be deployed more extensively on the main routes to ensure the safety of road users, including those staying at home," he said.
He also advised parents to look after their children during the holiday season.
"Despite the challenges we've faced this year, we are grateful for the promises we have fulfilled, such as appointing church leaders, including bishops, from various parts of the country," he added.
The Communications Manager at Namirembe Cathedral and Minister for Energy, Ruth Nankabirwa, also emphasized the importance of prioritizing peace and unity, noting that these are essential for national development.
"With the long festive holidays ahead, we urge families to explore opportunities where their children can acquire new skills," she said.
Archbishop Kazimba also paid tribute to the late former church leader, Rotarian, and former Buganda Speaker, Nelson Kawalya, who passed away the previous morning after celebrating his Golden Jubilee in marriage.
