Uganda: Drama As Teachers' Sacco AGM Disrupted By Arrest Over Misappropriation

30 December 2024

The arrest, coupled with the unexplained absence of Sacco Chairman Evans Kaganizo Mutesasira for most of the proceedings, brought the day's agenda to a standstill, leaving frustrated teachers demanding answers.

The Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Uganda Liberal Teachers Union (ULTU) Sacco in Bulindo, Wakiso District, descended into chaos today following the dramatic arrest of Secretary General Nathan Twinomujuni over allegations of embezzlement.

The meeting, which drew hundreds of teachers from across the country, was thrown into disarray as security forces surrounded the premises early in the day.

The arrest, coupled with the unexplained absence of Sacco Chairman Evans Kaganizo Mutesasira for most of the proceedings, brought the day's agenda to a standstill, leaving frustrated teachers demanding answers.

Later in the evening, Mutesasira resurfaced, confirming Twinomujuni's arrest and describing it as a politically motivated "witch hunt."

He alleged that David Egesa, a patron of the union and an official with Operation Wealth Creation, was behind the arrest.

Mutesasira accused Egesa of attempting to extort Shs 1 billion from the Shs 6.6 billion recently allocated to the Sacco by President Museveni.

"The funds were meant to benefit teachers, and we won't allow anyone to misuse or divert them," Mutesasira said, calling for Twinomujuni's immediate release.

Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Patrick Onyango confirmed the arrest, stating that Twinomujuni was facing charges of misappropriation.

The Shs 6.6 billion in question is part of a Shs 20 billion pledge made by the President to support teachers' Saccos across the country.

With tensions unresolved, the AGM was adjourned to March, leaving many teachers frustrated and uncertain about the Sacco's future.
